The calling

I didn't plan to visit my late cikgu Quran at all but when my kid sister rang me up and said my mom said I should visit, I reconsidered but my two older sisters advised me on the phone not to go cos' thr would be bad jam in Raub as people travel to KB for raya.

But sampai je at my office, I felt the calling..a very strong urge to drive back to Raub.I rang up Nik to inform him and if he wanted to go.He had a meeting with his Tan Sri and said impossible to join me.So despite feeling tht it would be a dangerous drive ( in fact I felt I would be involved in a car accident), the calling was too strong.

I went prepared...said my doa perjalanan, said my syahadah, played the Quranic cd and at the toll was given a cd on zikirullah which I played along the highway..in heavy rain.

Dengan izin Allah, I selamat sampai but jenazah had gone to the kubur.I didn't want to travel any further so stayed chatting with makcik matun who was not feeling well. She's the niece of aruah.A bit like Wea Zawiyah..kept asking me the same stuffs every 5 mins.I gave her and the maid some sadaqah which brought tears to her eyes..geez..senangnya nak buat org tua menangis...

Then I went visiting my two sisters (the only ones still in Raub).Have not seen my Kak De for almost a year.So we chatted, laughed and teased each other. Then I went to my Long's.The same thing..she gave me the long overdue Rawa trip gift.

Then I left for KL.It started to rain again...
At 11km from Bentong..I saw a car fast moving into my lane..I gave it a long honk but was aware this was the calling..the accident I knew was going to happen even before I left KL....the other car was really outa control..I swerved to my left and it hit me bad on my right....I was screaming my head off...folks...I thought you would not see me here anymore..I thought my head and parts of my body would be smashed and thrown all over the road. When I felt nothing...I simply could not believe it but knew what had saved me...the sadaqah and the zikirullah still playing in my car! Subahanallah...you are just a creature of God....

I was shaking..trembling in the cold rain.Didn't know what to do...then the police car tiba2 muncul..what a blessing..that they just happened to ronda that area (apparently kawasan yg sering kemalangan). It would have been a longer wait but everything went very fast..my sisters came and my husband was already at the Bentong police station by the time they towed my car there.

My niece and hubby (both are doctors) dropped by too..they were on their way back to Raub.We hugged, so relieved I was OK. It's funny how everyone reacted to my news...My eldest sister went hysterical...she was saying..oh my god oh my god..my sister is the nicest..dia sangat baik orangnya...and rushed to the scene, leaving my third sister who was taking her time to get ready...haha..kesian mereka...but the story did make me a little teary...I know everyone was reminded of the death of another sister..who died in a car accident in Ramadan...so I know where the grief, panic came from...

My mom tak payah cakaplah...she was asking Sal for Nik's tel no sebab nak marah dia for allowing me to travel alone...walhal Nik pun scolded me..haha..but I had asked him earlier, right? But Nik said I called him when he was in a deep meeting..he thought I was going with my sister..

Anyway, syukur alhamdullilah I'm OK.Semoga apa2 dosa I gugur with this ujian.I redho.

So many funny things happened in the series of events that followed.I was texting and calling close friends..some calls went unanswered so whn one call came through..I gave the caller my usual assalamualaikum..to which the caller jawab fluently waalaikumussalam..before going mana lu letak itu keleta? Saya tatak nampak.

It was Ah Ho, the tow truck driver! :))

While I am still shaking as I write this, I wish to remind everyone to be mindful when you are travelling this raya..jgn lupa doa perjalanan, do your zikir along the way..and yes..sadaqah before you travel.

Remember Izrail jengok kita at least 17 kali satu hari.It is so easy to die.Our job is to have some preparations.

Stay safe!

Farewell Sheena

Bibik tried to tell me of the bad accident but I was too occupied with work.Tak perasan she meant yg accident tu anak my jiran, Sheena.Kecik2 sama2 sambut bday with Z altho Z is years older.

She died today.I found out at around 2 pm.
Went to visit when the parents came bck frm the hospital.Shashi (who kindly cooked me dhal dish when I had Indian guests for dinner some time ago - she came to my house and cooked!) said soon I too will follow her.We hugged for a long time.I said don't talk like that..you still have Muniandy to care for and he, you. Please look after each other, don't give up on life.We are all going to die.Talk is free.Yang memikul lagi teruk remuk perasaannya. We will never say the right thing in situations like this.I read somewhere grieving people just want to be heard.Do not deny that right.Perhaps I should have just said I understand it is painful when Shashi said she would go next.

Muniandy ni baik so people came round the clock sampai the whole neighbourhood takda tempat nak park. The canopy looked like a wedding's which 19 years old Sheena tak sempat and we tak sempat tengok dia kawin. Such a beautiful child. And such is life.

I had promised to meet my PPRT new friends to discuss Earth Hour besok so I went.Enna and Mia were there.Nice ladies. Then the kids slowly came in.Older ones takda.Yg dtg 12 years -15. Maybe it's better to train them young so we discussed what we wanted to do.

Watch this space as I document Earth Hour 2016 with my new young friends.

Prayers for Nura Che Din

Nura is standing next to me with Shahmiah and Ju
(at NZ High Commissioner's home last year)

A good friend of my Waikato days is lying in coma in Kuantan at the moment. An sms from a fellow alum yesterday said that she collapsed in Kemaman and was rushed to a local hospital.

Nura Che Din is not the kind of person who would hurt even an ant.A soft spoken person who laughs more at your joke than anything else. This is how I remember her now as she lies unconscious in the Medical Centre in Kuantan. Close friends rush to the scene.Badri and his wife, Az (also Waikato alums) sms-ed, updating me progress. Nura's husband in his confusion and sadness found time to thank us for our sms-es. When we were not too busy with work, my family would visit Nura in her Shah Alam home (vice versa) but the last time I saw her was at the NZ High Comm function in 2011 and her last email to me was also last year in October, saying "Kak Freda..Kak Freda" over some article meant for women which I shared with her. This memory puts a smile on me now. Selalu every raya she would email me raya wishes..this year both of us sibuk cos' I tak hantar/call..dia pun tidak. My only regret now.

Epah her good friend at Waikato was informed and I tried to reach out to as many Waikato alums who know her and we recited yassin as we recalled her kindness and sifat lemah lembutnya sepanjang our friendship.

I remember the car accident (Epah langgar kereta police! but the police was in the wrong..buat U-turn tengah2 highway after clearing up another accident) on our way back from Manukau to Hamilton. Epah was driving. Nura and I would laugh at this when we got to look back at some of our adventures abroad.

The sheepskin I pesan some years ago is still lying good downstairs (she went back for a holiday a couple of years or so ago and I kirim a couple of sheepskins..setengah orang would find excuses not to entertain, kan? But Nura gladly obliged.Begitu mulianya dia)

Nura, I hope you hear this..we all love you and pray to Allah that miracles will happen as we pray for you.And to your family: please stay strong.

Pics sekitar pengkebumian and tahlil

We buried our mom immediately...sanak saudara pun ramai tak sempat ziarah apa tah lagi her kawan-kawan mengaji.Angah, cucu mak yg contractor tu (she also jaga him at one point or another.Waktu sekolah semua transit kat rumah Wan cos' sekolah dekat rumah Wan) took charge of getting the electric supply untuk menerangi kawasan perkuburan. It looked like a beautiful taman in great lights like that.Along fought for the kubur space sbb org tractor tu tak mau gali kat situ...tractor tak leh masuk.Dia kata go for the other side of the perkuburan.None of our family members was buried there so Along said kalu tak mau gali at the spot he pilih (next to anak kesayangan my mom..my kakak yg meninggal accident tu), mereka akan gali sendiri.Whoa..these Rawas..I tell ya...but I'm proud of Along (another cucu yg my mom jaga at one point or another) so Along called Angah his brother to get his Indon workers to gali the kubur.Lawak pun ada budak-budak ni.

A simple and swift burial attended only by family members
and close friends of the family
the talqin and doa were read by my eldest bro in law (an ustaz and imam of a mosque) and
the youngest bro in law (also an ustaz and Pegawai Agama Pahang)
the kubur spot was chosen by the grandson, burial was
managed by all the adult grandsons (from 4 mothers)
lihat dinding kubur  itu..it held together mcm disimen-simen.
Besoknya hujan lebat but tak banjir di kawasan ini.Alhamdulillah
Of all friends in the world I have, it is Hajjah Zalilah who menghantar

Radha, my mother's grocer friend of 35 years.Masa mak I tinggal sorang di kala dia masih sihat, Radha lah yang hantar tong gas ke hapa ke ke rumah my mom.Mak I ordered melalui phone je apa dia nak.
There were tears in her eyes before she gave me this beautiful smile (I told her nak letak kat fb.Sikit punya posing! :) )
Angah sponsored budak-budak tahfiz from Cambodia malam ke dua tahlil
The boys as young as 14 boleh hafal Quran up to 7 juz dah
Cara duduk pun nampak displin
Yang tinggal kini hanya selipar biru mak I (dia ada dua pasang..satu merah but nurses dok usik dia "nenek comel selipar merah: so she bought this blue.Kalau nak tau dia dah balik from dialisis ke tak all we have to do is  see if the selipar biru dah di depan pintu)
Walaupun penat baru balik from berbengkel dari Kuala Tganu, my friend
and flatmate of NZ days, Suri came and attended tahlil mlm kedua tu at my mom's place,
Suri Guru Besar SM Sains Raub and rumah sewa dia in the same neighbourhood as my mom's

I'm going to miss this home (I grew up here since I was 12 sampai umur 18)
Mak kasi the youngest sister rumah ni but she said we'll turn it into rumah pesaka tempat kami berkumpul raya and we'll feed the poor by having makan-makan here from time to time agar pahalanya sampai kepada kedua ibubapa kami
I got married here too
One of my birthdays at an orphanage (my 46th rasanya).Mak belum
di dialisis lagi masa ni

She gave me this bouquet of flowers (which none of my siblings had...jeles tak?)
But mom loved everyone equally. If you see a scar across her forehead tu, itu kesan accident yang mengakibatkan my sister meninggal on the spot. She was in the same car - terhumban ke bawah gaung but survived along with my two young nieces and my bro in law (bekas kadi Raub/Maran yang meninggal 6 months ago)

Really?

News from William and Mary College (from Francis, my brother in humanity) is this: Zainah Anwar of Sisters in Islam went visiting and read two of my poems.Francis wrote:

Subject: Zainah Anwar at William and Mary. She read two poems by Faridah--the veil poem, and poem for taliban. She was moved to tears. WE loved her. Not as much as we love Dr. Manaf :-)
Geez...I'm humbled by this news and I'm glad Francis' students are coming to do their bit for needy fellows in Malaysia. This IS Love! Allah is Great! And it is not by accident I read Mansur Al-Hallaj (a sufi from Persia) who propagated that we have to love beyond our race, religion, nation, gender, etc for all of us are creatures of Allah.I see things unfolding before me along this line.
And how it moved me to tears as well last night as I read about the sufi lady Rabi'ae al Adawiya as related by another great sufi writer from Persia (Farid Al-Din Attar, translated by AJ Arberry, Muslim Saints and Mystics) about how poor her family was at her birth that they didn't even have a drop of oil to anoint her navel, let alone light the lamp but her father had entered into a covenant that he would never ask any mortal for anything. So when his wife asked him to go to the neighbour's for a drop of oil to light the lamp on the birth of Rabe'a, he went out and just laid his hand on the neighbour's door, and returned. (p.40)
The poor woman wept bitterly and her husband too was sad and slept with his head on his knees. He dreamed he saw the Prophet who said this:
Be not sorrowful. The girl child who has just come to earth is a queen among women, who shall be the intercessor for seventy thousand of my community.Tomorrow go see Isa-e Zadan the governor of Basra. Write on a piece of paper to the following effect.'Every night you send upon me a hundred blessings, and on Friday night four hundred.Last night was Friday night, and you forgot me.In expiation for that, give this man four hundred dinars lawfully acquired.
Rabe'a's dad did as told (sent the message to the governor by the hand of a chamberlain). The governor's response was:
Give two thousand dinars to the poor as a thanksgiving for the Master remembering me.Give four hundred dinars also to the shaikh and tell him, I wish you come to me that I may see you.But I do not hold it proper for a man like you to come to me.I would rather come and rub my beard in your threshold. However, I adjure you by God, whatever you may need, pray let me know.' (p.41)
Upon reading this I also thought of the poor girl in Kelantan who got 20As in her SPM despite living in poverty (the family could not even afford to have their own home. They rented a house which looked like it would collapse at any time. And the father had not been paying the RM90 a month rent for the last one year cos' they were too poor. But er, the Chief Minister had given them a house after the news was highlighted in local media). Both stories show us how God is ever watching the poor and has ways of assisting them...if they seek not assistance from others...
And I also discovered this: when I let go (not whining over the fact I do not have sponsors from those I begged to help), one kind sponsor confirmed! Takbir! :))
So folks, let go and put your complete trust in Allah (tawakkal). He'll take care of you.

Al Fatihah to Sister Aminah Assilmi

I received this in my morning mail:

Salam,

For those of you who don’t know our dear sister, Aminah Assilmi, who passed away this morning in a fatal car accident, she was recently chosen as one of the top 500 most influential current Muslims in the world. She can be credited with getting us the Eid Stamp in the United States. And she has spoken often at mosques and Islamic conferences across North America; she has also been a champion of da’wah efforts, bringing many people into Islam by God’s will. May Allah have mercy upon her soul and make her grave a meadow of Paradise.

Her detailed life story is below.

Renowned female Scholar: Aminah Assilmi

Aminah Assilmi is a renowned female scholar of Islam she travels around the United States to give lectures , her personal story has admired hundreds of individuals ,she is also President of International Union of Muslim Women , the organization that has many achievements under its belt.

"I am so very glad that I am a Muslim. Islam is my life. Islam is thebeat of my heart. Islam is the blood that courses through my veins.Islam is my strength. Islam is my life so wonderful and beautiful.Without Islam I am nothing, and should Allah ever turn His magnificent face from me, I could not survive." Aminah Assilmi

It all started with a computer glitch. She was a Southern Baptist girl, a radical feminist, and a broadcast journalist. She was a girl with an unusual caliber, who excelled in school, received scholarships, ran her own business, and were competing with professionals and getting awards – all these while she was goingto college. Then one day a computer error happened that made her take up a mission as a devout Christian. Eventually, however, it resulted into something opposite and changed her life completely around.

It was 1975 when for the first time computer was used to pre-registerfor a class in her college. She was working on her degree on Recreation. She pre-registered for a class and then went to Oklahoma City to take care of a business. Her return was delayed and she came back to college two weeks into the class. Making up the missed work was no problem forher, but she was surprised to find that the computer mistakenly registered her for a Theatre class, a class where students would be required to perform in front of others. She was a very reticent girl and she was horrified to think about performing in front of others. She could not drop the class for it was too late.Failing the class was also not a choice, for she was receiving ascholarship that was paying for her tuition and receiving an ‘F’would have jeopardized it.

Advised by her husband, she went to her teacher to work out some other alternative to performing, such as preparing costumes, etc. Assured bythe teacher that he would try to help her, she went to the next classand was shocked by what she saw. The class was full of Arabs and “camel jockeys”. That was enough for her. She came back home and decided not to go back to the class anymore. It was not possible for herto be in the middle of Arabs. “There was no way I was going to sit ina room full of dirty heathens!”

Her husband was calm as usual. He pointed out to her that God has areason for everything and that she should think about more beforequitting. Besides, there was the scholarship that was paying her tuition. She went behind locked doors for 2 days to think about. When she came out, she decided to continue the class. She felt that God gave her a task to convert the Arabs into Christianity.

Thus she found herself with a mission to accomplish. Throughout the class, she would be discussing Christianity with her Arab classmates.“I proceeded to explain to them how they would burn in the fires of hell for all eternity, if they did not accept Jesus as their personal savior. They were very polite, but did not convert. Then, I explained how Jesus loved them and had died on the cross to save them from their sins. All they had to do was accept him into their hearts.” They still did not convert, and so she decided to do something else: “I decided to read their own book to show to them that Islam was a false religion and Mohammed was a false Prophet”.

At her request, one student gave her a copy of the Qur’an and another book on Islam. With these two books she started on her research, which she was to continue for the next one and half years. She read the Qur’an fully and another fifteen books on Islam. Then she came back to the Qur’an and re-read it. During her research, she started taking notes that she found objectionable and which she would be able to use toprove that Islam was a false religion.

Unconsciously, however, she was changing from within which did not escape the attention of her husband. “I was changing, just in little ways but enough to bother him. We used to go to the bar every Friday and Saturday, or to a party, and I no longer wanted to go. I was quieter and more distant.” She stopped drinking and eating pork. Her husband suspected her of having an affair with another man, for “it was only for a man that a woman changes”. Ultimately, she was asked to leave, and she soon found herself living in a separate apartment

"When I first started to study Islam, I did not expect to find anything that I needed or wanted in my personal life. Little did I know that Islam would change my life. No human could have ever convinced me that Iwould finally be at peace and overflowing with love and joy because of Islam."

Throughout these times, she continued studying Islam and although she was changing subtly from within, she remained a devout Christian. Then one day, there was a knock on her door. It was a man in traditional Muslim robe, who appeared to her as a “man in a long white night gown with a red and white checkered table cloth on his head”. His name was Abdul-Aziz Al-Sheik and he was accompanied by three other men in similar dress. She was very offended by Muslim men coming to her in nightgowns and pajamas. She was further shocked when Abdul-Aziz told her that he understood that she waited to be a Muslim. She replied that she was a Christian and she did not have any plan to become a Muslim. However, she had some questions to ask if they had the time.

At her invitation, they came inside. She now brought up the questions and objections that she noted down while she was researching. “I will never forget his name”, she said of Abdul-Aziz who proved to be a very patient and soft-mannered person. “He was very patient and discussed every question with me. He never made me feel silly or that a questionwas stupid.” Abdul-Aziz listened to every question and objection and explained it within the proper context. “He explained that Allah had told us to seek knowledge and questions were one of the ways to accomplish that. When he explained something, it was like watching arose open – petal by petal, until it reached its full glory. When Itold him that I did not agree with something and why, he always said I was correct up to a point. Then he would show me how to look deeper and from different directions to reach a fullerunderstanding.”

It would not be long before she would externally submit to what she had already been submitting to internally during the last one and half years. Later in that same day, this Southern Baptist girl would declare in front of Abdul-Aziz and his companions: “I bear witness that there is no god but God and Mohammed is His Messenger.” It was May 21, 1977.

Conversion to Islam, or to any other religion for that matter, is not always a simple thing to do. Except for a few fortunate ones, a new Muslim usually face consequences. The convert may face isolation from family and friends, if not pressure to go back to the family faith.Sometimes, a convert may even face sever economic hardship, as in the case of those who are asked to leave the house because of converting to Islam. Some converts are fortunate to continue to be well respected by family and friends, but most of them face minor to severe hardship especially during the first few years after the conversion.

But the difficulty that Aminah Assilimi had to go through and the sacrifice that she had to make for the sake of her conviction and faith is almost unheard of. There are few who could rely so much on Allah as she did, standing firm and meeting the challenges, making sacrifices, and yet maintaining a positive posture and influencing people around with the beauty of what she found and believed in.

She lost most of her friends, for she was “no fun anymore”. Her mother did not accept her becoming a Muslim and hoped that it was a temporary zeal and that she would soon grow out of it. Her “mental health expert” sister thought that she lost her mind. She attempted to put her in a mental health institution.

Her father was a calm and wise man. People would come to him for advice and he could comfort anyone in distress. But when he heard that his daughter became a Muslim, he loaded his double-barrel shotgun and started on his way to kill her. “It is better that she be dead ratherthan suffering in the deepest of Hell”, he said.

She was now without friends and without family. She soon started wearing hijab. The day she put it on, she was deniedher job. She was now without family, friends, and job. But her greatest sacrifice was yet to come.

She and her husband both loved each other very much. But while she was studying Islam, her husband misunderstood her for her apparent changes. She became quieter and stopped going to the bar. Her changes were visible to him and he suspected her of having affair with another man,for whom she must have been changing. She could not explain to him what was happening. “There was no way to make him understand what was changing me because I did not know.” Eventually he asked her to leaveand she started living separately.

After she openly accepted Islam, it went worse. A divorce was nowinevitable. This was a time when Islam was little known, much less understood for what it is. She had two little children whom she loved dearly and whose custody should have rightfully be given to her. But in a grave violation of justice, she was denied their custody just because she became a Muslim. Before giving the formal verdict, the judge offered her a harsh choice: either renounce Islam and get custody of the children, or keep Islam and leave the children. She was given 20 minutes to make a decision.

She loved her children very dearly. It is perhaps the worst nightmare that a mother can have: asked to willfully leave her child - not for one day, month, or year, but forever. On the other hand, how could she keep the Truth away from her children and live as a hypocrite? “It was the most painful 20 minutes in my life”, she said in an interview. Those of us who are mothers and fathers, especially of young children, little imagination is needed to feel the pain and torment that she must have passed every second in those 20 minutes. What added further to her pain was that according to doctors, she could never bear another child because of certain complications. “I prayed like I had never donebefore … I knew that there was no safer place for my children to be than in the hands of Allah. If I denied Him, there would be no way in the future to show my children the wonders of being with Allah.”

She decided to retain Islam. Her two dear children – one little boy and one little girl – were taken away from her and given to her ex-husband.

For a mother, is there a sacrifice greater than this – a sacrifice that is done for no material reason but only for faith and conviction?

“I left the court knowing that life without my babies would be very difficult. My heart bled, even though I knew, inside, I had done the right thing” . She found comfort in the following verse of the Qur'an:

There is no god but He,-the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal. No slumber can seize Him nor sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His presence except as He permitteth? He knoweth what (appeareth to His creatures as) before or after or behind them. Nor shall they compass aught of His knowledge except as He willeth. His Throne doth extend over the heavens and theearth, and He feeleth no fatigue in guarding and preserving them for Heis the Most High, the Supreme (in glory). (Quran 2: 255)

Perhaps the air of Colorado was too thin for justice. Or perhaps there was a plan in Allah’s greater scheme of affairs. Aminah Assilimi later fought back and took her case to the media. Although she did not get custody of her children again, a change was made in the Colorado law that one cannot be denied child custody on the basis of his or her religion.

Indeed Allah’s love and mercy engulfed her so much that, as if, she has been granted the touchstone of Islam. Wherever she goes, people are touched by her beautiful words and Islamic manners and become Muslim.

By accepting Islam, she became a changed person, and a much better person. So much so that her family, relatives, and people around her started appreciating her mannerism and the faith that brought about such changes in her. Despite her family’s initial reaction, she remained in touch with them and addressed them with respect and humility, just as the Qur’an enjoins the Muslims to do. She would send cards to her parents on different occasions, but she would always write down a verse from the Qur’an or the Hadith without mentioning the source of such beautiful words of wisdom. It was not long before she started making a positive influence among her family members.

The first to become Muslim was her grand mother. She was over 100 years old. Soon after accepting Islam, she died. “The day she pronounced Shahada, all her misdeeds had been erased, while her good deeds were preserved. She died so soon after accepting Islam that I knew her“book” was bound to be heavy on the good side. It fills me with such a joy!”

Next to become Muslim was her father, the one who wanted to kill her after she became Muslim. Thus he brought alive the story of Umar ibn Khattab. Umar was a companion of the Prophet who persecuted the early Muslims before he converted to Islam. When he heard one day that his sister became a Muslim, he went out with an open sword to kill her. But upon hearing some of the verses from the Qur’an that his sister was reciting, he recognized the truth and went straight to the Prophet and accepted Islam.

Two years after she (Assilmi) accepted Islam, her mother called and said that she appreciated her faith and hoped that she would keep it. Couple of years later, she called again and asked her about what one would need to do to become a Muslim. Assilmi replied that one had to believe that there is only One God and Muhammad was his Messenger. “Any fool knows that. But what do you have to do?”, she asked again. She replied that if that is what she believed, then she was already a Muslim! At this, her mother said, “Well … OK. But let’s not tell your father just yet”.

She was not aware that her husband (Assilmi’s step father) had the same conversation with her a few weeks earlier. Thus the two lived together as Muslims for years in secret without knowing that the other was also a Muslim. Her sister who wanted to put her in mental institution accepted Islam as well. She must have realized that becoming Muslim is indeed the most healthy and sound thing to do.

Her son, upon becoming adult, accepted Islam. When he turned 21, he called her and said that he wanted to become a Muslim.

Sixteen years after the divorce, her ex-husband also accepted Islam. He said that he had been watching her for sixteen years and wanted his daughter to have the same religion that she had. He came to her and apologized for what he had done. He was a very nice gentlemen and Assilimi had forgiven him long ago.

Perhaps the greatest reward for her was yet to come. Assilmi later married another person, and despite the doctors’ verdict that shecould never conceive another child, Allah blessed her with a beautiful boy. If Allah (swt) makes a gift to someone, who can prevent Him? It was truly a wonderful blessing from Allah (swt), and so she named him“Barakah

The sacrifice that Assilmi made for the sake of Allah (swt) was tremendous. And so Allah (swt) turned in mercy to her and rewarded her with enormous blessings. Her family discarded her after she accepted Islam, and now by Allah’s mercy, most of them are Muslim. She lost her friends because of Islam, and now she is being loved by so many.“Friends who loved came out of nowhere”, she said. Allah’s blessings came upon her so much that wherever she goes people are ouched by the beauty of Islam and accept the Truth. Both Muslims and non-Muslims now come to her for advice and counseling.

She lost her job because of wearing hijab, and now she is the President of the International Union of Muslim Women. She delivers lectures nationwide and is on high demand. It was her organization that successfully lobbied for the “Eid Stamp” and had it approved by the United States Postal Service, but it took many years of work. She is now working on making the Eid Day as a national holiday.

She has tremendous trust on Allah’s love and mercy and she never loses faith in Him. She was once diagnosed with cancer some years ago.Doctors said that it was in an advanced stage and that she would live for another year. But her faith in Allah (swt) remained strong. “We must all die. I was confident that the pain I was experiencing contained blessings.” As a brilliant example of how much one can love Allah, she mentions about a friend of her named Kareem Al-Misawi who died of cancer when he was in his 20’s:

"Shortly before he died, he told me that Allah was truly Merciful. This man was in unbelievable anguish and was radiating with Allah’s love.He said: “Allah intends that I should enter heaven with a cleanbook.” His death experience gave me something to think about. He taught me of Allah’s love and mercy."

All praise is due to Allah, she continues to live in good health. She now thinks that having cancer was the greatest blessing that she ever had.

IIUM relief team

After a quick lunch discussion, my good friend and I managed to assist a relief team to send stuffs to Kuantan. This is the beauty of social media...aid in the form of cash, food items, items for women and babies came pouring.

I shopped some at Giant and guess what? Giant employees not only helped with the packings but sent the trolleys and angkat those heavy boxes into my car.It felt good shopping this way. :)

I visited Pak Ngah at Selayang Hospital.Funny how it felt like family again.I saw the glint in Shahrul's eyes as his mom and dad discussed harta pusaka infront of him and his mom said nak tukar nama to both him and Sham.Haha.

Pak Ngah has good memory of my time in NZ...I must have written quite a lot to him.He remembered the accident in which Epah was driving.I went whaaaat? Byk benda I have forgotten.Terror betul Pak Ngah ni.

Lina gave birth to a fat baby (4 kilos).Nama dia Nasser Idris.Haha...nasib tak Idris Jala.So semua N now: Nabil,Nayli,Nadra and Nasser.Nik said nama mcm zaman P.Ramlee.I know he likes Irfan.

I like Desmond Tutu. ;)

Massive traffic jam on MRR2 ke Sg Buloh

I was stuck on MRR2 heading to Sg Buloh from Gombak for almost 5 hours yesterday. An hour into the jam, I rang up the traffic dept. The guy said he heard nothing and said it was common to be trapped at such an hour.I said no...I go through this route daily. This is mother of jams.He said oh.He'd investigate.I thought "don't we have sophisticated gadgets to detect accidents ke hapa ke when massive jam like this happens. Why so 4th world one?"

I was tired, hungry, nak pi loo, etc.So when I saw the next available sign to go back the opposite direction, I blah. Was too tired by now to take the alternative route (Duke yang mahal itu and there's no guarantee that it would not be jammed up as well yah?) So I did the wisest thing..stopped over at my sister's place in Gombak and slept over (rang up Nik to explain).

About 5 am I drove back home.

Lepas tu I rang up traffic to find out what happened (it was not in the news). The guy said bukan dia yang on duty semalam so he didn't know (how odd..again I thought don't they have records flashing somewhere in the system?) I told him I was going to call up a few Ministries to highlight a few things (like don't they have KPIs to clear up accidents within certain2 timeframe but not 5 hours! My fren sampai rumah 11 pm semalam) so can he find up what happened before I put in my report even traffic dept didn't know what was happening.

So the chap was kind enough to call me back and said it was an accident motor and kereta kat Kepong (but I went through Kepong...takda apa pun...ambulance and police car went further!) Anyway kalau motor and kereta takkan sampai 5 jam nak clear? Macam treler and treler je berlanggar!

But I emailed Dr Tan, MP for Kepong.Besok I nak call up the two ministries. It is so counter productive allowing rakyat jelata spending time and fuel so long like that just becos' there is inefficiency somewhere (and we want to know where so that we can tackle the root problem) The policeman said ini perkara biasa. My! Should we live with perkara biasa dan terus merana? When perkara burok jadi biasa, something is wrong somewhere.Someone is definitely not thinking to be better!

I'm a psychic. Am I?

I think I have this gift. Haha. Nik tak percaya. Dia cakap psycho adalah. Haha.

There had been many instances where I sensed something would happen then it would.I first realised it many years ago when I was driving after rain to DBP lalu jalan hutan tu. I felt like a tree would fall. True enough, sebaik I went past an area..a big tree fell, missing my car by an inch or half an inch. Subhanallah, I was shaking but I had said my zikir.

Then there was a time I was antara nak pi and tak ziarah my ustazah ngaji Quran (also my mom's neighbour in Raub) who had just passed on. I didn't want to go but my mom was pressing me to visit. Berat betul rasa nak pi but I tawakkal je. Baca zikir sepanjang jalan. When I got to Raub, jenazah dah berlepas but a sick aunty was in the house so feeling like I need to elak bencana, I bagi le sedekah then shot back to KL. Still berzikir. Then betul pun..sampai satu selekoh Raub-Bentong a small car (MyVi)  tiba2 lost control and came meluru my way from the other side. I sempat mengelak but got hit ..bawah tu gaung! I didn't know what to do dalam hutan tu.Alhamdulllilah tiba2 kereta police lalu. Then I rang my sister in Raub. They all wailed thinking I would be badly injured. Then they took me to a police station in Bentong. Then hubby dan segala family turun.Wow, close call.

Read here down the memory lane. High drama betul https://i-glass.blogspot.com/search?q=accident

And banyak lagi episodes where I sensed sampai my acupuncturist kata you ni psychic ke. Tu belum the sense that I would be attacked via my car window (yang ini I rasa berbulan2 sebelum kena..yang perompak smashed my window and took away my new Prada handbag).

Baru2 ni I got scared and I prayed hard it would not happen to me. I won't tell you what it is for fear of the law of attraction will befall me. I just doa bahawa tiada upaya kecuali dgn izin Allah and that Allah hindarkan saya dari mala petaka. If you have this sense, bykkan berzikir dan bersedekah.

Pak Tam is no more

My aruah sister's husband who we fondly call Pak Tam passed away on Wednesday around 4.30 am.Eishah, my youngest sister called me in the wee hours. She lives in Pekan, the closest to Pak Tam in Kuantan.

Nik tengah demam so after consulting with other sisters (we are all on WhatsApp), Kak Ngah and I decided to travel to Kuantan although jenazah will be brought back to Raub to be buried in the same graveyard as my sister.

We rushed and bila sampai, kejap tu mula bergerak (they were waiting for us sbb saudara mara from KL terus ke Raub which is closer to travel to).But Kak Ngah yg tak sempat breakfast (I too had little to eat) stopped nak cari batik to cover the jenazah carrier but tak jumpa.I looked for a restaurant to buy lunch for us both.Found it and we had lunch in the car.

When we arrived, jenazah dah masuk liang.Lucky we all sempat tengok in Kuantan. The jenazah was buried about 6 feet from my aruah sister dipisahkan hanya dgn dua kubur lain.Jodoh, rezeki, ajal dan tanah perkuburan adalah tentuan Allah and after 21 years, the two were laid next to each other.I am so humbled by this walhal kubur tu dah padat dan orang-orang baru meninggal semua ditanam in the other section (dipisahkan oleh sebatang jalan). My bro in law refused to remarry after the death of my sister who died in a car accident.Their kids were very young then, the youngest was barely 2.She graduated a few days before Pak Tam meninggal.Mungkin itulah doanya sepanjang hidupnya...agar dipanjangkan umur till the youngest berjaya masuk uni dll.

More later.

seasons in the sun

We left for Kuantan to attend my niece's nikah, done after Isyak.Quite an odd time to nikah but her family was facilitating her in laws from the East Coast (Friday is a weekend).

Quite kalut but we made it.Stayed at MS Garden where things seemed to fall apart: lampu rosak, iron rosak (in my mom's room, my room OK) but the hotel's fully booked, still. MELTA conference was on.Bumped into some familiar faces. They knew me, I blur, blur. Then I recalled. :)

The foods were delicious (masak sendiri). We left early. It was only on the way back to KL, listening to Terry Jacks' seasons in the sun that I felt I should have been more forgiving and hence, should have been more involved in this wedding...for the love of my aruah sister ("seasons in the sun" was her favourite song...and if you read the lyrics...it's a song sang by a dying person...)

We had joy we had fun we had seasons in the sun
but the hills that we climbed were just seasons out of time

and I particularly love this piece:

but the stars we could reach were just starfish on the beach

Waaaa...I remember her..I remember her in her rolled up checkered shirt with bobbed hairdo...she was close to everyone...(Tam died in a car accident when she was only 34, leaving behind her young kids aged between 2 and 12 then.I had blogged on this before)

Tam, your gal got married today.I know if you were around, the majlis would have been grander, better organised and the gals in our family, trying to outdo each other with our new jewellery/new baju kurung, new handbag...for the fun of it! We would have been there a day earlier and stayed all night, gossipping, teasing every member in the family (I missed it this time...they did..but I stayed at the hotel...too tired of the long journey, too hard pressed by the heat and space)

Your kids had handled life well and we wait for Baraqah's happy mo. maybe in 4-5 years and I hope she too would marry well like Hidayah and Taufiq.

Al fatihah in fond memory of you on your gal's wedding day.

Monday rain

Whoa..heavy rain after coming back from picking up the trophies from Dr A's place.I went with Lin.Ingat tak payah nak jumpa Dr A but his secretary said dia nak jumpa juga.So he advised Lin where to go during her 8-day vacation in his country.Sounded so much fun.Rasa macam nak ikut je.

Then we went to have lunch. It was then we were caught in the rain. But lunch was good cos' I cerita hantu.Lin ni semua benda percaya.Kisah I saw this man half dressed (pakai kain cuking je mcm ceti) dlm hujan tengah malam (past midnight) bawak pengail dlm hutan di kawasan Lancang ke hapa.Masa tu no car, no light, memang tengah hutan. This guy berjalan kaki ayam muka tak angkat tengok kereta lalu lalang...selamba.Then after we drove  past him (me and my siblings in one car), tak semena2 ada ikan melayang2 dan tergedik2 depan jalan kita.No sungai tepi tebing ladang getah or ladang kepala sawit tu.

We drove without saying anything.

Then bila terbaca kisah Tengku Khairuddin datang dari hutan berpakaian smart tapi berkaki ayam penuh selut dan bantu dua kereta yang tayarnya pancit, org tanya pasal berkaki ayam.He said he came from the jungle (ini waktu siang). Then said not far from there ada kedai baiki kereta kawan dia.Dia kata kalau singgah, kirim salam.

Bila singgah, org tu sampaikan salam Tengku K.Towkay tu angguk je but didn't say anything. He gave the guys his card.
The journey continued for the guys till sampai kat satu kawasan rehat. One of the guys pi toilet then bergegas2 dan kata dlm toilet dia kena sapa dgn Tengku K.Tengku K said dia yang jumpa kat hutan tu dan sebenarnya dia dah mati.

Dlm kereta depa called the friend and asked who Tengku K was.The workshop guy said Tengku K kawan dia tapi dah mati accident kat kawasan depa pancit tu.Orang selalu terkena.

Jangan baca ni waktu malam. As I type pun I seram.

Nilai sebuah nyawa

Sebuah nyawa? Takkan sebiji nyawa?

Anyway, on the way to work, I saw kasut bertabur di jalan and the road was blocked. An accident.I thought gosh..kena lalu tepi mayat ke..I went past it..ternampak satu batang tubuh terkujur.I thought oh no! But from my rear mirror, alhamdulillah, mangsa tidak mati..nampak dia bergerak2 lagi.

I have been thinking about this a lot: kenapa harga nyawa begitu rendah and mcm tak bernilai di negara ini? We have no respect for people who ride to work/home. If only the authorities dedicate one lane just for motorbikes, kan semua orand selamat.Takda la they zig zag membahayakan diri sendiri and orang lain. Coming home from The Netherlands, kita tengok betapa gomen mereka begtu teliti in setting up the infrastructure especially for those working. I was told that a bicyclist has more right than a car driver etc when hit..regardless salah siapa. The Bicyclist is always protected.

And the news of young kids mati terbakar at a tahfiz bukan kat ulu Pahang ke ulu Kelantan ke..in Keramat OK? Apakah tiada fire safety utk anak2 yang belajar di jalan Allah ini?We should be angry.Should feel disgusted for those who created tahfiz sebab nak dapat easy money. If they were sincere, they would think of all the necessary stuffs to ensure semuanya selamat.

There are so many things to be angry about in this country. Dah la PM dok flaunting mcm Msia ni kaya sangat. If only he knows some kids at the uni cannot do more courses cos' tak cukup cikgu or some teachers are overburdened with more teaching hours sebab tak cukup staff, would he feel for the rakyat? Would he even understand what it is like to be poor and overworked?

Engagement of the year

My sister's daughter, Baraqah, got engaged yesterday to a Kajang guy.Biasalah anak2 muda hari ini, we only meet the guy and family on the engagement day (we didn't attend the merisik ceremony).

This is the sister who died early (car accident) and this is the niece who was only 2 when she lost her mother and was raised single-handedly by her dad who passed away about almost two years ago..a few days after her graduation.

I arrived 3 hours into the event.Sempat buat last min buys (her lawyer sister yang bayar..I tunjuk je.Haha.They joked about it..sampai lewat..then hysterical itu tak kena, ini tak kena.I know my aruah sister. She's so particular about how things should be done.Kalau dia ada, mmg dia menunjuk itu ini juga.My god..I never stop mourning over her.I went pun in memory of her.Budak2 tu jemput pakai Wassapp je..kalu ikut protocol..mmg reason to merajuk. But no..this is my sister's daughter.I must be there meraikan.I know that they have been independent since her death that they can take care of themselves but...).Mek merajuk. She didn't turn up.Orang tua, gitu le. :))

We ended up having loads of fun.But it was very brief cos' everyone left on Sat itself except me and Nik.Tertipu as always.Initially semua pakat to balik on Sunday but masing2 got hal.It was our Mom who glued us.If she were still around, ada hal takda hal, semua balik Sunday (if my mom decided... ).We were too tired to do a day trip so decided to rehat at Cherating..hopping from one plc to the other for a good beach.Found it in Holiday Villa.I love this place! Nak pi lagi nanti.
