It's already December. My life is still on the fast lane (busy, no proper rest). Was at the film premier hosted by the NZ High Commissioner. Met new friends during cocktails held after the show. We planned for some 'get together' event soon. Best juga.Z came with me.Anthony Hopkins in The World's Fastest Indian gave his most excellent performance. Kita terhibur.
I hope 2007 will go gently. We are expecting another major earthquake just before Xmas.I hope there will be no more tsunami coming our way. :(

Greetings!
My comparative literature class at the University of Maryland has been discussing your poem, "The Veil, My Body" within the context of trying to understand the role of Islamic women in both present and past worlds. We have found the poem to be very provocative and informational; it has certainly started several fascinating discussions. However, within those conversations we've also been grappling with the meaning of the hijaab and the different forms it takes on for a variety of women. We are curious as to your personal experiences with the hijaab and specifically whether or not your consider yourself to wear a veil, a headscarf, or something else entirely? Do you personally differentiate between a veil and a headscarf? We've encountered many different English names for styles that meet the requirement of khimar (burqa, veil, headscarf, niqab, chador, chadri, boushiya, etc.) and are struggling to find the voices of the women that choose to wear the veil and not just the westernized interpretations of that choice, accompanying by notions of what it means to be "free" and "modern". Are we close in our understandings or are we interpreting everything completely off base? Any insight that you could provide us would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time and attention.
Sincerely,
Charlie Mercer
